6 Eco-friendly Tips for Wrapping Christmas Presents

6 Eco-friendly Tips for Wrapping Christmas Presents

There’s just a couple of sleeps left until Christmas day, and if you’re like me, you still have lots of present wrapping to do.  This year I’m trying hard to find eco-friendly alternatives for wrapping Christmas presents. Maybe you are too? Did you know that many wrapping papers aren’t recyclable? The added glitters, along with laminated, dyed, or non-paper fibres, make them tricky for recycling centres to process. Even wrapping paper that’s labelled as recyclable won’t be recycled unless you remove the sticky tape.  If you’re also trying to minimise your waste this Christmas, then use these six eco-friendly tips for wrapping Christmas presents.  Also Read: 10 sustainable secret Santa gifts that will surprise and delight Upcycle Old Newspapers Newspaper isn’t just useful for stuffing wet shoes; it’s also a recyclable (and compostable) alternative to wrapping paper. It’s softer than regular wrapping paper which makes it great for wrapping awkwardly shaped objects like bottles and baubles. You can even personalise your gift wrapping by choosing relevant pages for whoever you’re giving the gift to. Perhaps use the sports pages for your dad or the style pages for your fashion-loving son or daughter.  If you still buy newspapers, then you’ll probably have plenty laying around the house. If not, you can pick some up from your local newsagents. They’re cheap, and any daily newspapers that don’t sell during the day will be put in the recycling bin anyway.   Use Festive Shopping Totes For anyone who tends to use festive gift bags instead of wrapping Christmas corporate gifts presents, reusable totes are an eco-friendly alternative. They’re not expensive and help to keep plastic bags out of the ocean throughout the year. Wrap your Christmas gifts in a festive tote or choose a planer design so your recipient can use their new bag all year round. Also Read: Consider Branded Water Bottles as Corporate Christmas Gifts This Year Reuse Glass Jars Glass jars are fantastic for packaging DIY gift sets or homemade food gifts. Depending on the size, you can fill them with anything from handmade soaps and bath bombs to sweets and chocolates or art supplies. You probably have some empty glass jars stacked up in your kitchen already. Just clean them with hot water and dish soap, remove the label, and decorate the lid with a holly leaf, bell, or a simple ribbon. Your friends and family can enjoy your gift and reuse the jar in the new year.  Avoid Sticky Tape  As I mentioned earlier in this post, sticky tape can cause issues at recycling centres. You could spend your Christmas evening picking it off of every single present, but it’s better not to use it at all. Instead, get creative with natural string, paper clips, or reusable ribbons. It might be fiddly at first, but you’ll soon get the hang of tying wrapping paper.   Give New Life to Old Wrapping Paper My grandad used to tell us to open our presents carefully. He would then fold the paper and store it until the next Christmas. Did your parents or grandparents do the same? Reusing old paper to wrap Christmas presents is both a fun and practical way to minimise waste. Plus, if you have kids, you can use the old paper for stocking fillers. That way Santa’s wrapping paper will be different from mum and dads wrapping paper.  Also Read: Give Personalized Insulated Coffee Mugs for Christmas   Buy Gifts in Eco-friendly Packaging Of course, another practical alternative to wrapping Christmas presents is purchasing gifts that come in an eco-friendly festive packaging.  Here at FLASKE, we use 100% recyclable packaging that’s printed with environmentally-friendly ink. Our products are posted in stylish cylindrical boxes that are attractive enough to put under any Christmas tree. There’s no need to wrap the gift at all! What If I Already Bought My Christmas Wrapping Paper? If you’re already bought your Christmas wrapping paper, then there are a couple of things you can still do to minimise your Christmas waste. First of all, check if it’s recyclable. If it doesn’t say on the label, then you can do a simple scrunch test.  Take a small piece of your wrapping paper and scrunch it into a ball. If it stays scrunched, it’s recyclable; if it doesn’t, then it’s not. This is important to know because putting a non-recyclable paper into the recycling waste can result in the whole lot going to a landfill site.  Also Read: 6 everyday items that pollute the planet and their eco-friendly alternatives If your paper is recyclable, go ahead and start wrapping but avoid using sticky tape if you can. If it’s not recyclable, perhaps you can find other uses for this paper? Maybe give it to the kids to make paper baubles for the Christmas tree, photo frames for your festive holiday snaps, or Christmas table decorations.  It’s not too late to make your Christmas more sustainable with FLASKE Collection. Impress your friends, family, and colleagues by using these eco-friendly tips for wrapping Christmas presents this year. Merry Christmas from FLASKE!

Get Ready for Veganuary!

Get Ready for Veganuary!

With less than a fortnight left before 2021 arrives you've probably started to think about new year’s resolutions. What challenges do you want to set yourself in the new year?  A new exercise routine? An ambitious business goal? To learn a new language? How about changing your diet for one month to improve your health and the health of the planet? If the last option caught your attention then get ready for Veganuary 2021!  What is Veganuary? Veganuary is an annually run campaign that encourages people to go vegan for January. For 31 days, participants give up meat, dairy, egg, honey, and all other animal products, and replace them with a plant-based diet. The aim is to educate people about the foods they eat and the benefits of a vegan diet. The campaign began in the UK in 2014. Since then, it's become an international success. More than 400,000 people signed up to Veganuary in 2020, and over 1 million people have participated since 2014.  Why go Vegan for January? Most people are now aware of the terrible conditions in which livestock are raised in factory farms. But, putting animal rights to one side, you should also consider joining Veganuary 2021 for your health and the health of the environment. Although Veganuary only asks participants to adopt a vegan diet for January, when the campaign ends, many participants do eat less meat than previously and many decide to stick to a vegan every month of the year.  How does a plant-based Vegan diet help your health? Even though dairy, lean meats, fish, poultry, and eggs are widely believed to be essential parts of a balanced diet, there is overwhelming research that suggests the opposite. A plant-based diet has been proven to prevent and reverse type 2 diabetes as well as minimising the risks of high blood pressure and obesity.  If you're worried that a vegan diet won't fill your energy tank, don't be. Many Olympic athletes have switched to plant-based diets and report higher energy levels, better performance, and quicker recovery since making the change.  How does a plant-based Vegan diet help the environment?  The current animal agriculture industry takes a huge toll on the health of the planet. Global deforestation is a common practice as it clears land for livestock and the production of grain and soy. Of the 270 million tonnes of soy produced each year in the USA, Brazil, and Argentina (the worlds three leading soy producers, 67% is fed to livestock and poultry. Ruminant animals, such as cows and sheep, also produce methane, a greenhouse gas that has approximately 21 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide. If you're concerned about climate change, one of the best things you can do is join Veganuary and take meat and dairy off your plate. 5 Things That Will Help You Get Ready for Veganuary 2021 Prepare a List of Vegan Recipes Eating vegan isn't dull. There are tonnes of delicious recipes that are easy to make, and you don't need any special or expensive ingredients. Start browsing for vegan recipes or vegan meal plans and save them to your bookmarks. If you save 31 vegan recipes for dinner and a handful of breakfast and lunch ideas, you’ll be ready for every day of the challenge.  For inspiration, check out our healthy vegan buddha bowl recipe or our filling vegan three bean potato salad recipe.  Get an Insulated Lunch Box  Get ready for life on-the-go. This is often the trickiest because not everywhere will have vegan takeaway foods or snacks. The simplest way to get around this issue is to prepare your lunch or snacks at home and take them with you in an insulated lunch box.  The FLASKE Collection Insulated Food Pot costs just under €30 and keeps your food hot or cold for hours. It's leakproof and just the right size to slip into a day bag. If you know that you're going somewhere that has little or no vegan options, like your work or university canteen, make your lunch at home and take it with you. Also Read: 5 foods to put in a thermal lunch box Do a Little Research A little research goes a long way to stress-free Veganuary. Join local vegan forums or search the Veganuary website, for tips and recommendations. Alternatively, you can use apps like Happy Cow to find out which restaurants and cafes in your area are Vegan-friendly. Peta also lists several vegan-friendly clothing brands or products.  Plus, many popular coffee shops, as well as local cafés now cater to vegans and stock at least one type of plant-based milk. Don't forget to bring an insulated coffee mug if you get your drink to go.  Also Read: 8 vegan drinks to keep you warm this winter Tell Your Family and Peers Don't be shy to tell your family and peers that you're going vegan for January. Instead, be proud that you're adopting a new challenge that will help your health and help the environment. It will help you avoid awkward situations when you're invited round for a traditional roast dinner. Plus, telling your friends, family, and co-workers that you're going vegan for January might inspire them to join you. Why not suggest Veganuary to your boss as an eco-friendly office initiative?  Also Read: 6 tips to make your office eco-friendly Start Early Don't wait for the 1st of January to organise your Veganuary meal plan and adapt to a new plant-based diet. Giving up animal products cold turkey (pardon the pun), especially if you're used to eating animal products daily, might be too much of a challenge. Instead, try phasing it out, one product every few days, between now and the new year.  How Can I Join Veganuary? Are you ready for Veganuary 2021? Try This Winter Vegan Recipe: Sweet Potato Vegan Shepherd’s Pie

Are you looking for new vegan winter recipes to try out over the festive season? Or, are you taking the Veganuary pledge this January? Either way, you’re sure to love this vegan version of a British classic; a filling vegan shepherd’s pie with a creamy sweet potato topping. This healthy winter vegan recipe takes less than an hour to prepare and cook. It’s also gluten-free. Plus, all the ingredients should be available at your local market.  Keep reading to learn how to make this winter vegan recipe.  Also Read: 8 vegan drinks to keep you warm this winter Ingredients  For the topping: 500 grams of sweet potato (about 2-3 large sweet potatoes) 2-3 tablespoons of plant-based butter (or olive oil) Salt and pepper (to taste) Vegan cheese (optional) Parsley (optional) For the filling: 1 onion 2-4 cloves of garlic (according to your taste preference) 300 grams of mixed and chopped vegetables (prepared at home or store-bought) I used celery, carrot, peas, and corn 200 grams of green or brown lentils (uncooked) 1 litre of vegetable stock (homemade or from a stock cube) 2 tablespoons of tomato puree 2-3 teaspoons of fresh thyme 100 ml of red wine (optional)  Also Read: A vegan summer recipe to fill your thermos lunch box   How to Make  For the topping Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into smaller pieces, so they cook faster. In a pan, cover the potatoes with water, bring to the boil and simmer on a low-medium heat until very soft. Check by poking them with a fork.  Once cooked, take the pan off the heat, drain the potatoes and return to the pan (without heat) or put them in a large bowl. Mash the potatoes while they are still hot and melt the plant-based butter (or mix the olive oil) into them.  Add salt and pepper to taste, mix and put to one side.  Also Read: 5 foods to put in a thermal lunch box For the filling Dice and cook the onions in olive oil on medium-high heat until translucent. Add the garlic (diced) and cook for a few minutes more. They should start to brown slightly.  Add the lentils and stir. At this point, you would add the wine (if using) and let it simmer until most of the liquid is gone.  Stir in the rest of the vegetables*, tomato puree and thyme. Mix, then pour over the vegetable stock. Cover with a lid and simmer until the lentils are tender and the liquid is mostly gone. This will take about 20-30 minutes on low-medium heat.  *If you choose to use frozen or pre-cooked vegetables, add them in the last 10 minutes of cooking.  Combine the topping and filling Transfer the filling to an ovenproof dish. Use a shallow dish if you prefer a thinner shepherd’s pie or a deep dish for a thicker one.  Spread the mashed sweet potato out on top of the lentil filling, making sure that it’s even all the way across.  (Optional step) Run a fork in across the top of Shepherd's pie in straight or swirly lines for decoration and sprinkle with grated vegan cheese and black pepper.  Put it in a preheated oven and cook for 15-20 minutes. When cooked, garnish with fresh parsley and serve with seasonal veggies and a creamy vegan gravy or alongside toasted bread.  Also Read: Try this delicious vegan buddha bowl recipe Store the Leftovers  We hate to see good food go to waste and hopefully you do too. This dish is so delicious that you probably won’t have any leftovers, but just in case you do, it’s safe to store in the fridge and consume within 3-5 days.  I like to make this vegan recipe at home on Sunday evenings, store it in the fridge, and take the leftovers to work in an insulated lunch box. That way, I can enjoy a hot and healthy vegan meal every day of the week. Alternatively, you can cook a couple of vegan shepherd’s pies at the same time and store them for up to a month in the freezer.  Try This Healthy Winter Vegan Recipe at Home Adapt this winter vegan recipe to suit your taste. If you’re not a fan of sweet potato, then you can make this same dish with plain potato or a 50/50 mix of plain and sweet potato. Alternatively, you could make the topping with mashed pumpkin or butternut squash depending what’s in season at your local greengrocers or farmer’s market. Likewise, you can mix up the vegetables you use; green beans, parsnips, and mushrooms also work well in this winter vegan recipe.  Choose your ingredients and enjoy this healthy vegan recipe at home or on the go in a FLASKE collection.

Everyday Items That Pollute Ocean and Eco-Friendly Alternatives

Everyday Items That Pollute Ocean and Eco-Friendly Alternatives

Are you ready to reduce your carbon footprint and work towards a cleaner planet? Start by learning which are the most common plastic items found in the ocean, then eliminate them from your day-to-day life.  Plastic is produced in millions of tonnes worldwide every year, but the ocean is already swimming with plastic waste. Floating garbage patches are an obvious problem. What’s less obvious are the concentrated areas where microplastics float beneath the ocean’s surface; the plastic soup that pollutes the sea and endangers sea life. Yet, the easiest way for us to understand the plastic waste problem, without sailing out to sea, is by looking at the plastic items found in the ocean coastlines.  6 of the most common plastic items found in the ocean in 2019 The Ocean Conservatory recorded the quantity and types of everyday items found in the 2019 International Ocean Cleanup. Here are six items that made it into the top 10 trash found in the ocean. Food Wrappers Most people shop in supermarkets. Unfortunately, most items on the supermarket shelves are heavily packaged in non-recyclable and non-biodegradable materials. Especially imported perishable goods which need extra packaging to protect them on the long journey from a foreign farm to a local shop.  Food wrappers aren’t just ugly; they also pose a threat to wildlife and sea life which often ingest tiny plastic parts as the wrappers break down.  Eco-friendly alternative: You can minimise damage by buying foods without packaging, like loose fruits and vegetables, instead of packaged goods. Bring reusable bags and insulated food pot to farmers markets and zero-waste stores if you have one in your area.  When you can’t avoid food wrappers, opt for foods in reusable containers, such as screw-top jars or pots, or foods that come in recyclable or recycled packaging. Although it’s not yet widely available, some food and snack companies now package their products in compostable packaging, just do a little research and shop with care. Alternatively, you could prepare your foods and snacks at home and take them with you in a reusable insulated food pot.  Also Read: 5 foods to put in a thermal lunch box Cigarette butts Volunteers collected over 4 million cigarette butts in the 2019 International Coastal Cleanup from beaches, bays, and coastal areas. Cigarette butts made up 3,628 of the 14,365 trash items collected in the Netherlands.  What’s the problem with flicking cigarette butts onto the beach instead of disposing of them responsibly? Won’t they biodegrade anyway? Eventually yes, but the filters in cigarette butts contain a plastic called cellulose acetate. This material takes up to 15 years to biodegrade completely, releasing toxins in the process of breaking down. This means that, even if you put your cigarette butts in the bin, they’re still going to hang around in landfill sites and pollute the soil. What’s the alternative? Eco-friendly alternative: An unpopular but valid solution is for people who smoke to give up cigarettes which will protect personal health as well as the health of the planet.  A more realistic and easier alternative is to switch to filters made from natural, biodegradable, recycled or chemical-free materials. Some environmentally conscious tobacco companies are already on the case, such as Greengo, a Dutch cigarette company that produces filters made from 100% recycled, unbleached, and natural fibres.  Plastic Bottles & Caps Over 1.9 million plastic beverage bottles and more than 1.5 million plastic bottle caps were collected. Thousands of disposable bottles are bought every single day. Because single-use plastic bottles are not safe to reuse and can only be recycled a limited number of times, the majority end up in the trash.   Eco-friendly alternative: The good news is that plastic bottles and caps are easily avoided. High quality and food-safe stainless steel water bottles that are 100% recyclable but tough enough to last for years will keep tonnes of plastic out of the ocean. It will help you stay hydrated and save you money at the same time. A thermally insulated FLASKE Bottle costs just €30 and refilling it costs nothing. How much do you spend on bottled water each month? You don’t need to stick to water either. Try making soft beverages at home and taking them with you in a reusable water bottle. And, if you do need to buy a drink on the go, choose something in a can or a glass bottle so that you can recycle it after. Unlike plastic, glass and aluminium, as well as stainless steel, can be recycled an unlimited number of times. Also Read: The 10 coolest FLASKE reusable water bottles to buy online Plastic Straws & Stirrers Since the heartbreaking video of a sea turtle with a plastic straw wedged in its nose went viral, straws have been symbolic of the risk of ocean pollution to sea life. Although plastic straw and stirrer bans are now in force in many cities or whole countries, 942,992 were collected in the International Coastal Cleanup. Eco-friendly alternative: Here’s a simple solution. Don’t use straws. Most of us learnt to drink from a glass, cup, or bottle when we were kids. Unless you have a specific condition that makes it difficult to drink without a straw, you probably don’t need to use one. That said, there are eco-friendly alternatives for anyone who doesn’t want to give up straws. Bamboo straws and stainless-steel straws are trendy, inexpensive, and easy to clean. Plastic Shopping Bags Totally 1,351,390 plastic bags, including grocery bags and other plastic bags, were found in the International Coastal Cleanup making it one of the biggest plastic waste items that we use every day. Sea life frequently gets tangled up in plastic bags or eats plastic parts which stay in the stomach for their entire life. A classic example of this is sea turtles which often mistake plastic bags for their usual prey, jellyfish.  Eco-friendly alternative Again, this is another simple swap that makes a massive difference to the environment. Just take a reusable cotton tote with you whenever you go to the market and have a few ready for your grocery shopping. Switch plastic bin liners for compostable bin liners, or don’t use a liner at all.  Also Read: 30 top tips for going zero-waste Plastic Dinner Ware & Take Away Containers The last item on our list is actually a group of common plastic items found in the ocean. Disposable dining ware, which includes plastic plates, cutlery, cups, single-use Styrofoam, and take away containers. This group makes up a total of over 1.4 million items from the 2019 International Coastal Cleanup.  According to the 2020 record from the Ocean Conservatory: “enough plastic cutlery was found to feed a three-course meal to 66,000 sharks.” While that conjures up an amusing image of sharks sitting at the dining table, the reality is that these non-biodegradable and sharp utensils are a genuine risk to sea life.  Eco-friendly alternative: Once again, the eco-friendly alternative is cheap, easy, and better for your health. Switch disposable cutlery for a stylish travel set of bamboo cutlery, wash your dishes, or replace disposable plastics with plates and cups made from compostable materials.  To minimise take away containers, consider eating out instead of getting your food to go. Or, bring your own reusable insulated food container to take your food home in.  Let’s Clean Up the Plastic Soup You can help the Plastic Soup Foundation to clean our oceans by reducing the amount of trash that goes into it every single day. Switching disposable plastic items, such as those mentioned above, for reusable, recyclable, or compostable alternatives is the first and easiest step on the eco-friendly journey.   Also Read: Why we support the Plastic Soup Foundation For more inspiration on eco-friendly and plastic-free products that will help you live more sustainably, visit our FLASKE Collection.
